What this test can tell you
The preview confirms that a camera stream reached this page. Dimensions describe the active stream, and frame timing estimates the frames observed here.
These readings do not certify the sensor’s maximum resolution or performance in another application. Requested quality, lighting, browser load, device selection and permission can change the result.
How to use it
- Press “Start camera test” and allow camera access.
- Check the live picture, resolution and frame rate.
- Pick another camera or a higher quality setting if available.
- Use “Take photo” to save a snapshot to your device.
Resolution and frame rate
The reported dimensions describe the active video stream, which may be below the camera sensor’s maximum resolution. The page estimates delivered frame timing where the browser exposes it; the result is not a laboratory measurement. Low light, browser scheduling and device settings can affect the reading.
Webcam not working: a camera troubleshooting sequence
First check whether access is blocked, then whether a camera stream starts, and finally whether the picture is usable. This avoids treating a browser permission problem as a camera failure.
- Open any physical privacy shutter and connect an external camera directly to a working USB port.
- Allow camera access for this website. In Chrome, review Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera. On Windows 11, also check Privacy & security → Camera and desktop-app access.
- For Safari on Mac, check Settings → Websites → Camera and the browser’s camera permission in macOS where applicable.
- Close other camera applications and try Start again. If the stream opens, choose the intended camera from the list.
- If the preview stays black, test the camera in the operating system’s camera app. A working picture there narrows the problem to browser access, device selection or competing software.
What the webcam resolution and FPS results mean
The dimensions describe the current video stream, not necessarily the camera sensor’s maximum resolution. Requesting 1080p or 4K is a preference: the device and browser can select a different supported mode. Frame timing describes the frames observed here and can change with lighting and browser load.
| What you see | What it means / next check |
|---|---|
| 1280 × 720 | The active stream is 720p. Select a higher quality preference and check the reported dimensions again. |
| 1920 × 1080 | The active stream is Full HD. This does not establish sharpness, focus or low-light quality; inspect the preview and a saved photo too. |
| Lower FPS in a dark room | Improve the lighting and retest. Also close busy tabs; low FPS alone does not identify a hardware fault. |

Not working? Try these fixes
Black image or “camera in use”
Close Zoom, Teams, Skype or other tabs using the camera. Check that your laptop’s privacy shutter or camera key is not blocking it.
Windows: no camera found
Open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera and allow access for apps and desktop apps. Check Device Manager for a disabled camera.
Mac: permission problems
Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and enable your browser, then restart it.
The picture is mirrored
The Mirror control flips this page’s preview. Other applications have their own preview and recording settings; this page cannot tell you how they mirror an image.
